Each year the FVCA sponsors a charity.

For 2009 we have chosen St. Luke’s Hospice based in Plymouth. This is, sadly, a very relevant charity to everyone who lives in or visits the South Hams. Please support our fund raising event.

Their website says it all:

“When faced with the reality of coping with a terminal illness, many patients say that the prospect of having to cope with pain, distressing symptoms and the fear of a loss of dignity is what concerns them the most.

At St Luke’s Hospice in Plymouth, staff are dedicated to providing the free high quality palliative care and support to patients from across the South West of Devon and Cornwall as they reach a most critical point in their lives. St Luke’s cares for hundreds of patients each year in their ‘preferred place of care’ whether that is at the Hospice inpatient unit, at Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital or in their own homes.

The 20-bedded hospice inpatient unit is located in a peaceful setting at Turnchapel near Plymouth whilst the specialist community teams work out of historic Pearn House, close to the city centre. From here St Luke’s Specialist Palliative Care Nurses provide hospice expertise and care to patients who choose to remain at home with their families.

A St Luke’s Specialist Palliative Care team is also based at Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital providing care for critically ill patients.

St Luke’s Day Hospice is also located at Pearn and this is where outpatients can relax and socialise in a supported and happy atmosphere with others who know first hand just how they may be feeling. It is a place where many firm friendships are forged. At the Day Hospice patients also have access to medical and therapeutic services and a growing number of complementary therapies.

The Hospice is staffed by over 200 staff and more than 700 volunteers. They and many others are able to benefit from ongoing training from the Education department.

St Luke’s costs more than £5 million each year to run 75% (£3.5m) of that figure must be raised within the local community by the hospice events and fundraising team.”
